Joost Rekveld (1970) has been making abstract films and light installations since 1991, originally starting out from the idea of a visual music for the eye. He has been making most of his animated films with optical and mechanical setups, using the computer as a controller and composition machine in order to orchestrate the precise movements of optical components. His installation making grew out of the tools he developed to make his films, often inspired by the lesser frequented by-ways in the history of science and technology. His work so far has dealt with various forms of scanning, or with concepts related to the early history of optics and perspective. His interest in the spatial aspects of light triggered a shift away from the screen, towards more architectural and theatrical forms of work. At the moment he is becoming increasingly implicated in activities that resemble cybernetics, artificial life and robotic architecture.
His films have been shown worldwide in a broad range of festivals and venues for experimental, animated or otherwise short films. He has collaborated on many theatre projects, often with dance group Emio Greco | PC or music theatre ensemble De Veenfabriek. He has been putting together many programmes about the history of abstract animation and light art, culminating in the 9th edition of Sonic Acts: Sonic Light 2003. In 2004 he curated ‘4D in the Filmmuseum’ a large exhibition, series of screenings and lectures for the Dutch Filmmuseum. Since 2008 he is the head of the ArtScience Interfaculty of the Royal Conservatory and the Royal Academy in The Hague.

Joost Rekveld (1970) maakt sinds 1991 abstracte films en lichtinstallaties, aanvankelijk vanuit het idee van een visuele muziek voor het oog. Hij ontwikkelde voor de meeste van zijn animatiefilms optische en mechanische opstellingen, waarin hij de computer gebruikte als aanstuur- en compositiemachine om de precieze bewegingen van optische onderdelen te orchestreren. Zijn installaties kwamen in eerste instantie voort uit deze machines die hij ontwikkelde als gereedschap, op hun beurt vaak geïnspireerd door de minder bewandelde zijpaden in de geschiedenis van wetenschap en technologie. Zijn werk was tot nu toe vaak gebaseerd op verschillende vormen van scanning, of op concepten die gerelateerd zijn aan de vroege geschiedenis van optica en perspectief. Zijn interesse in de ruimtelijke aspecten van licht veroorzaakte in de laatste jaren een beweging weg van het scherm, in de richting van meer architectonische of theatrale vormen. Zijn films zijn wereldwijd vertoond in een scala aan festivals en vertoningsplekken voor experimentele film, animatiefilm of anderszins korte film. Hij was betrokken bij vele theaterprojecten, vaak met dansgroep Emio Greco | PC of muziektheaterensemble De Veenfabriek. Hij stelde vele film programma’s samen over de geschiedenis van abstracte animatiefilm en lichtkunst, met als hoogtepunt de 9e editie van het Sonic Acts festival: Sonic Light 2003. In 2004 was hij de curator van ‘4D in het Filmmuseum’, een grote tentoonstelling, serie vertoningen en lezingen in het Nederlands Filmmuseum. Joost Rekveld (1970) fait des films abstraits et des installations lumineuses depuis 1991, partant de l’idée d’une musique visuelle. Pour la plupart de ces films il a construit des dispositifs optiques ou mécaniques, utilisant l’ordinateur comme outil de contrôle et de composition, afin d’orchestrer les mouvements précis des éléments optiques. Ses installations se sont développées à partir de ces outils, qui ont souvent eté inspirés par une lecture en marge de l’histoire de la science et de la technologie. Jusqu’a présent le travail de Joost Rekveld a exploré diverses formes de balayage, ou des concepts en relation avec les premiers pas de l’optique et de la perspective. Son interêt pour l’aspect spatial de la lumière l’a amené à s’éloigner de l’écran, pour aller vers des mises en forme plus architecturales ou théatrales. Récemment ses recherches se sont orientées vers une pratique qui se rapproche de la cybernétique, la vie artificielle et l’architecture robotique.
Ses films ont été montrés dans un grand nombre de festivals et lieux pour le cinéma experimental, cinéma d’animation ou le film court. Rekveld a collaboré à de nombreuses productions de théatre, souvent avec la compagnie de danse Emio Greco | PC, ou l’ensemble théatre et musique ‘De Veenfabriek’. Rekveld a compilé nombre de programmes de films sur l’histoire du cinéma abstrait et de l’art de la lumiére, organisant notamment la 9eme édition du festival Sonic Acts: Sonic Light 2003. En 2004 il à organisé ‘4D’, un évenement important comprenant un exposition, des programmations de films et de conférences au musée du cinéma d’Amsterdam. Depuis 2008 il est chef de l’Interfaculté ArtScience du Conservatoire Royal et de l’Académie Royale des Arts de La Haye.
